H1N1 STATEMENT

Problem of  H1N1 pandemics was treated on the Board Meeting of The Federation of the Hungarian Medical Societies out off agenda. The problem in Hungary emerged as a consequence of contradictory medical and media related communication. Public hesitation, and disbelief in the value of the Hungarian vaccine was the result. To clarify the present situation MOTESZ made the following statement in the name of the societies:

H1N1 flu epidemics became a world wide danger. In some places it became already epidemic. Hungary shares this peril with other European countries. Thus it is imperative to let publicly know that the prevention by vaccination is the only effective remedy if a necessary number of the population became vaccinated. This can be achieved by vaccinating an effective ratio of the population.  According to the World Health Organization and European Professional Organizations the Hungarian vaccine is commonly accepted, and  one of the best in the world. It has a significantly strong effect with only slight side effects and possesses the surface and intrinsic antigen structures. Administered, it provides the necessary protection. Besides the vaccination of endangered groups of the population (children, youngsters, pregnant women  and those  elderly, who suffer from chronic illnesses) health care workers have priority in vaccination since they may infect large numbers of patients. It is essential to maintain the efficiency of health workers in order to preserve their caretaker capabilities. The oath  of "nil nocere" becomes realized by that.

Insufficient and contradictory information together with alternating professional judgment can not cover the fact that the epidemic is  threatening, and the only solution to organize effective defense is the  inoculation. Hungary is in the first line with its nationwide vaccination system. This system starts with organized vaccination in early childhood and  vaccination in order to prevent threatening endemics, suits well to the health culture of this country.

The spread of the disease  is faster - compared to other epidemics - and  millions can be infected in short time. This may put serious burden to the population, to  the national economy, and  particularly to the health system and health workers. Public health without governmental help is incapable of overcoming this threat and can not take all responsibilities alone. Successful anti-epidemic activity does not rest exclusively with physicians, pharmacists, and nurses.

Organized and unlimited availability of vaccines, easy way of administration, professional competence, cooperation and efficient activity of physicians and health workers are indispensable to overcome the epidemic risk.

Declaration of these goals and duties corresponds to the conceptions of various Hungarian Health care and Medical organisations, and the most conspicuous evident of this is the permanently developing membership, which at present amounts to 130 member-societies. It also means that we are able to co-ordinate the interests and views of some 30.000 doctors, researchers and scientists in order to achieve the best efficacy at national as well as at international level.
The activity of the MOTESZ is carried out at several levels with the participation of different organisations connected to the Association.

Preparation of the wide range of activities, supplying operational terms and conditions, execution of duties are carried out by a well-organised office-staff, excellent professional apparatus and its bodies (the Presidium with 9 members, the Federal Council with the representatives of member-societies, ad-hoc and permanent committees).
The residence of the Association is in the administrative district of Budapest, next to the Parliament.
